  2. branches of the Christian church. It began in
  3. the 19th century with the extension of
  4. missionary work to Africa and Asia, where the
  5. divisions created in Europe were
  6. incomprehensible; the movement gathered
  7. momentum from the need for unity in the face
  8. of growing secularism in Christian countries
  9. and of the challenge posed by such faiths as
  10. Islam. The World Council of Churches was
  11. founded 1948.
